CANVEY ANIMATED

Canvey Animated was a year-long stop-motion animation project developed with young people on Canvey Island in partnership with Yellow Door Youth Group, and co-commissioned by Creative Estuary. The 2025 project used animation as a tool to explore storytelling, local history, and personal experience.

What We Did
Participants explored the fundamentals of stop-motion animation, from developing ideas and storyboards to designing characters and sets, capturing movement frame by frame, and editing with sound. Sessions encouraged creativity, collaboration, and experimentation, allowing young people to develop skills at their own pace while contributing to a shared creative outcome.

Stories from Canvey Island
The project focused on retelling local historical events alongside reflections on growing up on Canvey Island today. These stories shaped the final film, giving participants the opportunity to connect the past with their own experiences.

The Flood
The project culminated in The Flood, an animated film revisiting a significant moment in Canvey Island’s history. A pre-reel documenting the creative process, from initial ideas to the finished film, was also produced.
